Harbin Engineering University (HEU) was established as a shipbuilding department in 1953. Later on, it rehabilitated into an independent educational institution named “Harbin Shipbuilding Engineering Institute” in 1970 and renamed as “Harbin Engineering University” in 1994. HEU is the “Project 211” university and the “Double First-Class” university with full support in the construction and development from the central and local government of China. In the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), HEU was ranked among the top 500 universities in the world, meanwhile in 2022 QS Asian University Rankings, HEU was ranked 218th. According to the U.S. News 2021 Subject Rankings Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electricity Engineering of HEU were ranked 75th and 95th respectively. In 2021 Shanghai Rankings (Global Ranking of Academic Subjects GRAS) ranking “Ship and Ocean Engineering” achieved to the top 3, and Control Science and Engineering entered the top 100.

HEU is dedicated in education and research in the fields of Shipbuilding industry, Marine equipment, Ocean exploration, and Nuclear energy application (SMON). It is the largest educational organization of China in Shipbuilding, Marine Engineering and Nuclear Energy Application. Its alumni are working across the shipbuilding industry in more than 140 organizations, accounting for about 40positions of the technical experts and senior administrators. In the first batch of 5 Chief Experts of the Chinese National Nuclear Corporation, 3 experts are HEU alumni.
